Trick Concepts also has some amazing collapsible staffs (staves). Though they are $115, the quality is well worth it. No rattle, no flex, can't even tell its collapsible (which is how it should be). I have had mine for 2 years, and I definitely do not play easy on it, and it has held up immaculately without issue. Highly recommended - http://www.trickconcepts.com/Collapsible-Staff-P99C11.aspx

And they have also released a version of this technology for double staffs (that seperate in the middle instead of from the ends) - http://www.trickconcepts.com/Collapsible-Double-Staff-Sold-Individually-P1616C11.aspx

Okay, so....

Paraffin is biologically neutral, it's just a long chain hydrocarbon with no bio-active bits. Even if you drink it, only about 5% absorbs into you body. Because there's no way to process it IN the body, it tends to just coat the surfaces of the skin when it comes in contact. Your lungs are just a very specialized surface of your skin: very thin, allowing gasses to pass back and forth. When your lung tissue gets coated with oil, it can't move CO2 out or O2 in, thus you can cause part or even all of your lung tissue to stop working until the cilia have a chance to manually remove the slick.

Iso is biologically active, like ethanol. Your body can process it, move it through the blood, and most importantly: eliminate it. Yes, inhaling it is bad, but only because it absorbs in the lungs and the burst of it hitting your blood stream can make you a little queazy.

Coating the lining of your mouth does NOT work. Things like Buttermilk and Olive oil are also biologically active and too quickly get absorbed by the body. And here's the catch too. Fatty acids are built a LOT like paraffin with an active end that makes them biologically useful. this active end opens doors in the digestive system that allows the long, neutral end to slip in. These doors stay open for something like an hour. So if there's paraffin in your mouth, stomach or intestines within that hour gap, you could be absorbing as much as 60% of the paraffin instead of 5%. Fatty acids includes the stuff in milk, veggie oils, or one of these...

I was thinking about using isopropyl alcohol but I read somewhere that it is like paraffin, you can't, or not supposed to, inhale while its in your mouth. I'm kind of a hypochondriac, so I'm looking for the safest fuel for accidental inhalation and/or ingestion. I'm going to try my best to refrain from both, but it's a good thing to look out for.

See, I thought of an idea this morning that I could hold buttermilk in my mouth until its time to take a sip of the alcohol, to perhaps coat the lining of my mouth atleast somewhat, limiting alcohol consumption. And it's literally going to be a sip, to the point of one blow-out is going to get 90% of the liquid from my mouth. I remember reading somewhere on here about buttermilk, but I think it was someone explaining it to be a myth.

Any amount of time you hold 191 in your mouth will absorb 1-4 shots worth of alcohol through the skin. So, you may be legally drunk immediately after. If you're preforming with fire, insured, afterwards, your insurance will be null.

If you can possibly manage it, 70% or 91% isopropyl alcohol will give you a bigger fireball than ethanol, won't make you drunk (WILL kill all bacteria in your mouth) and will evaporate right away. Plus you can spin after the fireball without nullifying your insurance.

Hello, I just joined tribe.net and the Fire tribe to ask this question. It's been asked before; I've seen the other topics on this tribe, but I want to to know what you all think about me using 190 proof alcohol for fire breathing.

I am part of an annual outdoor play called, "The Aracoma Story." Its basically a love story based around true events, kind of historical fiction. Anyways, there is a torture scene which calls for me to breathe one breath of fire. I don't want to use paraffin because of the chemical pneumonia risk and kerosene, etc, because of the carcinogens. The guy last year was a first time breather and used 190 proof alcohol and had no problems.

I was also thinking going with edible biodiesel. In addition to that, I'm also thinking about getting the director to use 151 proof, plus mixing it (well, not technically) with vegetable oil. Since I have long hair, and yes, I'm a guy, a guy very savvy in special effects is ordering a liquid substance that is fire-retardant for my hair. I may consider using this for my chin/face as well.

It is only one blast per night, so theres no risk of a drunken mishap on blast two/three/four. Anyways, I wanted to know what you experienced breathers/spinners think.

Okay, 1) check the dates. It's like 4 years since this conversation was active. Most of these people have left Tribe.
2) If you have questions about a specific fuel, ask them.
3) Rarely do people find the time to gather up this kind of data for you. Luckily, the folks at NAFAA have done it.

ok, so i have found this dicussion fascinating, but a bit confusing.

can we get a list with details happening, maybe? at least of the types of fuel that have been discussed so far?

Name -
Aliases -
Availability - common, uncommon, special order
Cost - high, medium, low
Pro's -
Con's -
Possible Health Risks -
Tips for use -

i'm a casual fire playperson, i've was using kerosene, but it's horrible stuff, so i've stopped. been looking for a alternative i like, so i'm fairly interested. i've also seen coloured alchohol and lamp oil, and of the three have to give kerosene the best light production and ability to stay lit, both for weather and motion.

Sorry, but I'm just not connecting the two. If anyone is demeaning the efforts of people in the Conclave, it's the ones that still treat them as a "distraction" to the waiting time needed to burn the Man. This isn't something "in the past" but an ongoing problem.

And when exactly did you check your sense of humor at the door?

I think you kind of just proved the original point I was nicely trying to say. You appear to have a vendetta because of negative past experiences you've had with the conclave. I think the nonclave is a good idea making fire dancing during the ceremony prior to the man burn accessible to those who can not commit to the conclave. However, the way you are approaching this with your tone on the website is definitely demeaning to everyone in the conclave. If you want to create a new group with no drama, leave it in the past.

Very inspirational. Thing is, by equating the "Way" to God, I couldn't help but see this as the beginning of just another religion. The new scientology if you will. First step: inspire and gather. Second step: add dogma. Third Step: utilize the flock for unrelated purpose.

On the other hand, my eyes are brown, so I could be full of it...

Bashing the efforts?!?!

How do you figure. I ran 9 conclave groups and got to see people's time get cut short, equipment trampled, poisoned, blown up, denied access, and a host of unbalanced treatments laid out to people who just wanted to perform. If YOU want to take the idea of freeing yourself from that burden as a insult, then go ahead, but don't try to slander this effort with your personal implications.

So essentially the website is copied from the original conclave information page from burningman.com, however the nonconclave.info isn't actually associated with the burning man website/url. The only differences here is that text has been changed?
I understand the lure of this idea for people who can not commit the time/resources/effort to being in the conclave, but the tone does not come off as neutral and even though I get the impression that the snarkiness it is meant for the organizers of the conclave, it's also bashing the efforts of people who want to be in the conclave.
I guess when it comes down to it, it is Burning Man, so why take ourselves too seriously? Good luck, I'm interested to see how this turns out.

Depends on the context. I've only spun naked a handful of times, I would never do it on a stage for a competition. Wait a minute, I take that back, my fire striptease got me into the final round of fire idol... but I didn't do the full monty!

But seriously, it can be very liberating if you're out at burning man spinning deep playa for a sunrise in the buff, or on a bunch of rocks above a hot tub for a similarly disrobed crowd. Those aren't just appropriate times, they're fantastic!

But up on a stage for a gig... thats just sleazy.

I think the naked part just doens't add anything to the spinning. At least the pictures don't give me that idea.
I love to feel the wind on my skin and feel one with nature (that's what walking around naked does for me) but firedancing naked just makes it weird for me.
So no, naked fire dancing in public goes in the slutty category for me. Even a thong (also for men) and bikini would be more attractive to me. Fire dancing in as little as that shows that you have the guts to wear less, can give the free idea ànd doesn't distract that much from your technique.

However, if you're dancing for yourself, not on stage and being naked makes you feel awesome: go for it!
