Does anyone know of a good place to pick up lamp oil in Reno? I'm driving out, so I can bring it with me from home, but I'd just as soon pick it up closer to Burning Man. I've got all my other supplies taken care of, I think, but since this'll be my first time there, I'd be grateful if anyone can tell me what I should add to the list.
- fire tools
- leatherman
- soaking bucket
- spinout bucket
- chemical-resistant gloves
- duvetyne
I plan on bringing some spare parts for poi, so if anyone's equipment breaks, track me down. I'll be at 2:00 & K (Temple camp).
Any other tips? Feel free to add them.

Re: Provisioning for the playa
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 1:43 PMSorry, can't really help you with the lamp oil...I would do some internet research for camping supply stores and find one that is the least out of your way. I know there is a walmart in Reno that is a popular last-minute burner destination.
Your supply list sounds good; the only thing I was recommend you consider is how you intend to haul all of your gear around. I am skipping this year's burn, but for next year I think I am going to build a rickshaw or something similar to carry all of my fire gear. I realize it is too late to take on a project like that for this year, but if you are planning to travel any distance, maybe hitch a ride on someone's mutant vehicle rather than walk two miles while carrying all of your gear/fuel dump.
I wish I was coming to see this year's Temple...I have seen the design and documentation of the build process, and you guys have done an incredible job! I can't wait to see pictures...
Anyway, I hope I was helpful...Happy burning!

Tue, August 25, 2009 - 2:02 PMYou can order lamp oil directly from the source's webstore and have it delivered anywhere. I understand that UPS delivers to the playa.... :) -

Re: Provisioning for the playa
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 7:40 PMThat's sweet...although it stands to reason, I had never considered that option before. Could you get them to deliver something directly to your camp, or would they hold it at the gate I wonder... -

Re: Provisioning for the playa
Sun, September 13, 2009 - 5:05 PMUPS does not deliver to the playa. However if you ship it ahead early enough; and the package is small enough hard asses like myself (who work the BRC post office) Will rack you down on playa and give you you god damn mail that you were to lazy to come get at our local post office branch. We call you names tell you how much you mail smells like home and generally make you feel bad about yourself for making us work during the burn.
++++Having said all that----- I know it's a little late but ACE hardware in Reno carries Ultra Pure lamp oil. Have it next to their burning man display. keep them in mind next year.

Re: Provisioning for the playa
Sun, September 13, 2009 - 6:06 PMI did manage to dig this up, and will post after the event, just for posterity's sake:
When mailing to the playa please address your playa-bound mail as completely as possible in this format to increase the odds of your mail being received:
CAMPER'S PLAYA NAME or REAL NAME ...or better, both.
CAMP NAME (and any helpful descriptions of street facade, tents, or large features that might be at this location to help the postie find the addressee)
CAMP ADDRESS: as close as you can get (example: 9:35 and Hummer) &/or nearest cross-street, and even Man-side or mountain-side (if you know)
C/O BRCPO
Burning Man
Gerlach, NV 89412
PLEASE be sure to put a return address on all incoming mail. Should we not find the addressee we will return all undelivered mail to sender.

Re: Provisioning for the playa
Mon, September 14, 2009 - 7:55 AMFor whatever it's worth, I found citronella oil at Lowe's, stacked right by the front door--best I could do. Home Despot was completely sold out.
