I have an upcoming shoot with a local fire artist and one thing that we talked about was finding some kind of oil or lotion that would give her skin a nice sheen for the pictures. Of course, this needs to not be flammable. Any suggestions?

Re: Body oil or lotion for fire performers
Mon, July 7, 2008 - 11:33 AMWell, not to be too much or a smart-arse about it, but... water. All the other petroleum, alcohol and glycerine based emollients are likely to increase fire hazard.

Re: Body oil or lotion for fire performers
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 11:47 AMBaby oil is mostly mineral oil, it's a petroleum product and will most certainly burn (it's just hard to light). Put it on a feather or wick and try lighting it.

Re: Body oil or lotion for fire performers
Thu, July 10, 2008 - 9:05 AMskin is not wicking!!!! you cant really even use lamp oil for fleshing because of the higher flashpoint and low burn rate. I have tried to light myself on fire on stage so many times with lamp oil and unless you are covered with the biggest man sweater it won't burn on bare skin. if you don't trust me try it yourself. -

Re: Body oil or lotion for fire performers
Thu, July 10, 2008 - 11:24 AMNo, skin isn't wicking, but body hair and the ends of fabric are. I've done a lot of fleshing, and know full well that lamp oil CAN burn on bare skin in the right circumstances. Here' check the opening stunt on this video. About half the time, the lamp oil ignites and I have to put my hand out after the fireball...

But the point is that people rarely do fire completely nude with head and eyebrows shaven. There's usually plenty of places for lamp to find a wick. -

Mon, July 14, 2008 - 11:59 PMHow about a body glitter. They come fine enough that if applied lightly it would make a sheen. -

Re: Body oil or lotion for fire performers
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 5:24 PMI thought about that, but those types of liquids absorb into the skin with frightening speed. You'd have to get clear natural aloe, the glob it on to get any real time out of it. Water is a lot easier to spray, and re-apply when needed.

Re: Body oil or lotion for fire performers
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 2:15 PMMehron makes a body glitter powder that you mix with a base liquid and paint on. Wait until it dries completely, then dress and do fire. I've been completely covered in the stuff. But you must wait until it's dry, then it's a polymer with no alcohol. But get the remover too, it's tough to take off with soap, need makeup remover. I've also used Baby Magic and regular glitter but that was super messy. Glitter like that has a half-life, diminishes but never completely goes away.
Or just do what Tedward suggested and use water, but be careful about lowering the body temp too much if it's chilly where you're shooting. Everything has its drawbacks and strengths.
