So my camp is building an art car out of an 83 mercedes. We are basically building a giant birthday cake on top of it. Coming directly out of the middle of the cake will be a 12 foot tall (12 feet from the ground) candle that will be a basic weed burner propane flame effect. The candle will be a
The main issue I have had to consider is that i have to shield all of my lines as there will be drunk and high people all over this car, and the cake will have people all over it and inside of it, as girls will be climing through the sunroof to jump out and yell surprise.
As of now there is no passenger side front seat, and I am placing the propane tank (upright of course ) under the dash. I am running a standard propane hose from a gas grill with a regulator off the tank and to a conversion from 1/4 brass to 1/2 brass into a 1/2 brass ball valve. This will run along the center console at the floor just in reach of the driver. From the ball valve is going to be a compression fitting to convert to half inch copper, and right before it gets to the base of the candle, I am putting in a second ball valve in case it fails.
I am using compression fittings, as I have no experience brazing and I have rectorseal 5 and a pipe flanger.
The base of the candle is a 2x6 box built directly into the floor of the car and braced meticulously. The pipe will run into the box and out the top through a small hole into a 1 1/2" floor flange that will be attached to the box. attached to the floor flange will be (you guessed it) a 1 1/2" 10' galvanized pipe that will go through the roof of the car and through the framed roof (braced again with a strong tie), which should be enough to make it so it could take anyone pulling on it (although we are not allowing it)
We are then simply going to run 1/2 inch flex copper through the pipe to the top, crimp slightly(but not all the way) where it comes out of the galvanized, drill holes in the side, and wrap it with steel wool .
So am i going to blow myself up? Lots of experience plumbing.... no experience with propane.

Re: Propane flame effect for art car..... need to run this by some experienced pyros
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 2:15 PMYes.
Maybe.
Of course not . . . it's Burning Man!
What's the steel wool for?
It should make sparkly steel embers that float to the skin your surprise-babes (and merge) for a few seconds before they go out..
Bring earplugs. Those surprise-babe shrieks can be incredibly loud.
Why all the little holes rather than just one hole?
Have you tried this?

Re: Propane flame effect for art car..... need to run this by some experienced pyros
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 3:45 PMThe steel wool was my suggestion. The FLG use it as an auto-re-ignite device. The wool heats up with the flame, but if a breeze pops out the flame, the wool will be hot enough to re-ignite the propane without need for a pilot light, or starter. -

Tue, August 25, 2009 - 6:01 PMNice thought. Glad you're aboard here.
But I do hope they try it out before the playa.

No. This information is innacurate. Yes, almost all continuous dispersive flame effects have STAINLESS steel wool on them, or BRASS wool... but never black steel wool. It's not for reignition.

Re: Propane flame effect for art car..... need to run this by some experienced pyros
Wed, August 26, 2009 - 12:28 PMI may have had the type of wool wrong, but the rest is from a conversation I had AT the flg camp, specifically asking about their use of it on the original flaming lotus. They might have originally used it for dispersing the flame, but they noticed it re-ignited the flame too.
