Re: update-2008 National Fire Performance League Championship-Texas Regional
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 2:17 PMDoes anyone know anything about who is putting this on? I just found out about it myself, and a friend who has attempted to get in touch with the organizers has only gotten a canned response, leading her to think something is fishy about it (she also said that my name was somehow associated with their Myspace page, although I cannot check that since I'm not on Myspace).
And I'd have to agree: some nameless party, popping up out of nowhere, with no apparent history in the fire community does tend to make me raise an eyebrow. -

Thu, August 14, 2008 - 7:18 PMThe only correspondence I've gotten from them was the original invitation to their tribe, and then their response to my note about pulling this post down from the fire arts education tribe, the conclave tribe, and a couple others I moderate, too.

Re: update-2008 National Fire Performance League Championship-Texas Regional
Mon, September 15, 2008 - 12:17 AMOkay, I built a new gmail account and applied to the NFPA for entrance to the event.
They've finally responded and told me to read the MySpace site and follow the instructions.
www.myspace.com/fireperformers
On one of the side bars, I noticed some special rules for fire breathers. I downloaded the file and here it is
-=-=-=-=-=-=-
For Fire Breathers
Due to recent events where 3 fire breathers, in various locations, using carbon based fuels like lamp oil , coleman fuel, etc.,and subsequently contracting fatal esophageal , sinusoid, and cerebral cancers, the only fuels which may be used for fire breathing must be food grade fuels. Fire breathers MUST have their fuel inspected. The loss of these 3 performers is tragic and we must take action to stop this dangerous fuel use and promote the use of biologically safe fuels for our fire breathers. Mixtures of food grade powders, oils, and/or fuels, alcohols , or whatever mixtures you develop , must be utilized and inspected for safety of their ingredients. Sorry folks, start working on your mixtures. It is commonly said to avoid the use of alcohols due to their explosive volatility. It may be found that using a very low ratio of ethyl alcohol to some type of vegetable oil may subdue it's explosive tendancies. There are recipes floating around out there which indicate the use of methyl alcohols. DO NOT use methyl alcohols! They are toxic.NFPL is not responsible for any experimentation you may conduct nor the outcome of use of your fuel mixtures. You are responsible for researching these alternative fuels and techniques. This is one of the prime directives of NFPL, to identify and promote the safest and best performing nontoxic fuel for fire breathing. You are responsible for the fuel mixtures you choose to use and their risks. Below are some links to some alternatives and important information you should know.It is recommended that you read all MSDS sheets for all fuels.
There will be two fire breathing categories of competition.:1. Dry fuels 2. Liquid fuels
Each competition registration form for both dry and liquid fuels will have on them, the recipe for the mixture you are using. Help us in finding the safest fuels for our beloved fire breathers. Be careful!

Liquid Fuels:

If you follow the liquid fuel links they advocate the use of Kerosene. But I LOVE the fact that they are admonishing "carbon based" fuels. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! I really wish these clowns weren't ending in disgrace in a few days. I think more of this nonsense would be a hoot.
Seriously though, proclaiming "safety" without doing the research is a dangerous thing. That's how accidents happen in the first place. I know their heart is in the right place, but giving people less than 2 weeks to locate and re-learn everything on a new fuel is NOT safe. Particularly when they don't offer a viable alternative. -

Re: update-2008 National Fire Performance League Championship-Texas Regional
Mon, September 15, 2008 - 8:50 AMOh man. I don't even know where to start. I love the "carbon-based fuels." That is classic. But I'm also blown away at how they're inspecting fuels, deciding what kind of fuels you can use, and then saying "You are responsible for the fuel mixtures you choose to use and their risks"
No, actually, if you tell me what I can and cannot use, *you* are taking responsibility.
I attempted to do some research on these guys, and posted my distressing lack of findings to my blog. Eventually one of them did show up to comment, basically saying "come on out, it'll be fun" without identifying him/herself or otherwise doing much to allay the concerns that have been raised. -

Mon, September 15, 2008 - 11:55 AMGawd, I hate to be the one to put this on the table, but....
Has anyone checked with the local fire authorities to be certain they're on the up-and-up? -

Re: update-2008 National Fire Performance League Championship-Texas Regional
Mon, September 15, 2008 - 7:15 PMI spoke with the Comal County fire marshal. He said that as long as the event is outside, there's not much he can do beyond mandate that the grass be mowed (assuming there's no burn-ban in effect). But he was not aware of the event, had not been contacted by the organizers. -

Re: update-2008 National Fire Performance League Championship-Texas Regional
Mon, September 15, 2008 - 8:56 PMhow about the state? Isn't there a licensing program in Texas? -

Re: update-2008 National Fire Performance League Championship-Texas Regional
Tue, September 16, 2008 - 8:30 AMThere is a state-level flame-effects permit, although that's more intended for individual practitioners. It's not always clear when it's needed—for example, I was involved in an event sponsored by the City of Austin, and the city required that *somebody* present must have a state flame-effects permit, but not everybody. And it's conceivable that the county could issue flame-effects permits (the campground is in an unincorporated part of the county, so no city permit), although from the sound of things, the fire marshal just wasn't thinking along those lines.
Other than that, I'm not aware of any event permit or anything like that that they would need. -

Re: update-2008 National Fire Performance League Championship-Texas Regional
Tue, September 16, 2008 - 10:55 AMOkay, well, if the locals are aware of it, and it's all legal like, then, yeah I guess it's gonna happen.
I got a feeling that if any real numbers show up, we'll see some seriously hurt people, but I don't think there's anything we can do about it.
Rain Dance anyone?

Re: update-2008 National Fire Performance League Championship-Texas Regional
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 4:13 PMWow,
Good to know. Still curious about the "National League" and "World Class Competition" bits, but I suppose "new" enthusiasm is the answer...
Law of attraction and all...
I have met several people over the last couple of years who share this jubilant enthusiasm of "That!" and "That too!", and I certainly applaud this. I too still believe that I can make my living through these arts; through a product, instruction, a festival, or the big show. However, it takes consent to do such things, for reasons you so professionally mention in your blog. Exploitation and inexperience are high on the fire performer hit list, and rightfully so. It's not elitism, it's much needed protection. If you wanna be IT, it's gonna take making friends. That way, when you CAN put together the end all *whatever*, you will have 1st draft picks on a dream team, the right to claim you have such a relationship as National League, and the trust of the greater community to represent us well through safety and quality. Plus, if someone beats you to the punch on your desired target, you may at least get to come along for the ride...
My message to newer performers is "Take your damn time." Everyone's in such a rush to lock this down while it's the cool new thing, that it tends to be counterproductive from the stance of being taken seriously. There is a bar. One set by people who completely deserve to be career performers. People who put thousands of hours and dollars to do what they do. People who can only hope to break out because the greater organism is cheering them on. This takes face to face engagements, trust, and that you put in your own work, and give back to the community. This cannot be done anonymously and expect to be what it claims, and such a title can always be expected to be shut down.
Thank you for following up on this, and for protecting us :)
You rock,
Grimm
