best to to wrap it up in a scarf. Don't use any products (flameball!!). Once you get good though, you can probably skip the wrap, I would just suggest wrapping until you aren't hitting yourself so often and feel confidant. I spin staff and usually just pull my hair back (long wavy), but ya know, better safe than sorry, wrap that mop up!

I have really long straight hair, and i find that putting it up in a normal ponytail is dangerous because my poi are perfect length to knick the end of my ponytail if I'm spinning behind my back over my head...(actually, sometimes they even flip my tail around while practicing unlit)...and if i double it up or put it in a bun, it sticks out farther to where it's possible for the chain to wrap around it...

Sooooo...what I do is put it in pigtails (whether they be high or low) so that it's more to the sides than behind my head, and then braid them (whether one or many) and loop them up so they do not hang past my sholders. I've always gotten compliments about how "cute" it is and it seems to work just fine, so I've just stuck with that...it's quick and simple.

However, Betty is right, if you tend to still hit yourself from time to time, or get close to your head (or even if you don't and would just like to be safe), then using a scarf or a bandana works great along with tying up your hair. I've never used one, but most girls I know do...but maybe i should! After all, it's not likely you'll ever actually set yourself on fire, but if that flame touches any hair on your body, it WILL singe!!

I knit and crochet if i were to make a cute hat out of woll maybe with a wool dread pony tail for decor. would that keep my hair pretty safe and be cute too?

I put my hair in a low pony tail at the base of my neck and spray down with some water to keep the wispies in.

I've recently taken to spinning in a hat... my beat-up black thrift store cowboy hat.... it might not be your style, but you can find a fun costume-y hat that you'll still look hott but not hairless.

Of all the hings I've seen use, those rasta knit hats (nappy bags) seem to work the best.

I have really long curly hair as well... I've been doing 2 things:

my latest is either buns or braids piled up on my head (out of the way) with lots of shiny sparkly clips to hold in place and add decoration...

the other thing I've done is use a fake hair peice (usually wool yarn braids or dreads, but other stuff works too) with the hole in the center and a hair band attached... I put my hair in a ponytail where I want the fake hair to start, then pull the ponytail through the hole in the fake hair and use the hair band to secure it... then I braid my hair and wrap it a bunch of times around the hair peice (this gives the fake hair a "lift") and pin it down with bobby pins... it's kind of a pain to do sometimes, but I've never had any problems with it, and if the fake hair bit gets toasty, it's not yours, so no big deal... just use wool or other materials that won't go up in flames easily :)

          :)

Depending what yur doin' with fanz, there's a lot more freedom with hair as you can keep it at a distace from one's hair. Braids, buns, ponytails, ponytails and twisting two peices together...lots of options. A spritz bottle is helpful for the ends of hair *witch* are most likely to burn. Good luck and check out pictures of all the fun hairstyles to try with fanz. Long hair is a bit more threatened by poi....it's usually not too bad, i've gotten a couple "fuego hair cuts" it's endearing and not all that noticible unless you really get cho' self good. Another thing is to be careful with products as many of them are very flammable...i'd love to add temp color sometime, but their all highly flammable. If your very concerned about your locks, there's no shame in sportin' a stylie hat of whatever sort, just check material....leather is always best.

Wool is a great natural fiber and will help keep your hair safe. Be careful of adding anything for decorations. Sometimes the decorations can get caught in the poi.

I personally have rather short hair but I still cover it with a cotton bandana so that no hair shows. I know it isn't the most "attractive" look, but I'd rather have a full head of hair when I'm done with my burn. To compensate for the "bald" look, you can try some wild make-up, but no false eyelashes. Even though they are usually made of human hair, the glue is extremely flammable and dangerous.

BTW, I found out covering my hair was the smart thing for me to do...about 8 weeks ago during a routine practice burn one of my poi lost momentum and hit me on the left side of my forehead at my hairline. Because I was wearing a cotton bandana I didn't get burned...I did however compress the facial nerve and caused a slight concussion! But...I still had my hair...LOL!

        Burn bright...burn safe!
        Love,
        Leah

really - really one never burns THAT much hair. However, to remain the cute goddess you are, you can put your hair up in a couple little nubby buns depending in the thickness of your hair, if it's fine, 2 will do, if it's thick, get clever with 3 or 4, then use synthetic hair falls to make your hair style. The synth falls are usually fire resistant, they are easily replaced and, aren't your hair. You can then play with colors your wouldn't dye your hair, you can add sparkily stuff and things. You can also use wool, fat yarns to make your "hair"

great ideas...although the knitted rasta hats I have seen catch fire...and be careful with the buns on top..I used to do those until I had a chain wrap around one...luckily my hair was a little wet so minimal damage occured...still if you have long curly hair (I do too)...just tie it up in the back and you can leave a few curly strands down...that's cute...wetting your hair a bit before you burn is a great way to avoid a "fuego hair-cut" (I love that)

I'm all for the pig tails braided with some shinny ribon. I have long hair that is stick striaght and it works fine for me.

wetting the hair down is always a good way to go.

It is so funny for me to be reading this thread....
(mean this in no condescending way at all..)

simply because the last greensector i was at, me and my friend dave spent about 6 hours doing lit contact staff games (ie: throwing 2 staves back and forth not allowed to use hands to catch) and when the sun rose, we caught a look at ourselves in the mirror, and realized that there wasnt a hair on our heads that hadnt been singed.... eyebrows, hair, facial hair... you name it, it was burned

We looked as though we had been beaten with flaming torches..... Every time i go to get my hair cut, the stylist asks who gapped my hair so bad in so many places.

When i don't feel like smelling burnt hair all night, i usually just throw a cap over my head...

I have long dread locks and I really do smell them burning every time I spin!

Of course my locks are like memory/idea/experience storage for me, so a burn spot here and there just adds to their character!

I've never had my head go up in flames and don't really worry about it. Fire is a ravenous beast, insatiable in its hunger. It will eat whatever is easiest for it to digest and when there is fuel about, hair is like the second course, you know? Unless you've got fuel in your hair ... You'd be smart to wrap your head in natural fibers, in other words. Especially while learning.

I'm surprised people are mentioning using synthetic hair pieces at all. Even if some are fire resistant, they will all still melt to your head. Isn't synthetic hair worse than human hair? If you bonk yourself in the head and you're wearing synthetic hair, won't it melt, possibly fuse itself to your natural hair, or scalp?

I find that usually if I'm wearing synthetic hair (I prefer my big wool falls, great look and the best material for fire) . . . I find that it'll just ruin the fake hair, it curls up gnarly but I never did more than brush or bump the fire to it so it doesn't become a danger. If you held the fire to it for a while maybe this could be an issue.

I don't like to use synthetic hair because it does get ruined after a while and it's a waste of money to replace it.

WOOL falls are awesome, I set a flame to it as a test and watched it catch, and extinguish itself (smells like burnt hair of course)! Sometimes in performance I get a giggle if I bump my hair, knowing that the gasp and sigh I hear is the audience seeing a flame light up and go out.

I do spin during practice without the falls and have singed my bangs especially many many times. I brush out the singed ends and no one is really the wiser after a shower. I don't put a lot of products in my hair and some dampen their hair but I usually don't. I'll just pull back my hair, maybe into a bun.

But from experience the synthetic hair won't melt to my person if I just bump it while spinning.

L.A. Looks Styling Spray (Mega), when dry, seeeeems to make hair more fire resistant. Maybe.

Works for me, but I haven't explored it enough to know the limits. Your flamability may vary.

A wool watchcap or leather cap/hat/hood should also work.

And there's always a duvetyne snood.

When I started spinning staff I noticed that everyone in Controlled Burn wore do rags, they said to protect their hair (both men and women) but no one in LA did. My staves have pretty big wicks and one good smack upside the head at the beginning of a burn could be very bad. My hair is long and I wanted to keep it that way, so I asked Michael, one of the guys with long hair how his hair never caught even though he didn't wear anything on his head. "I wet it before I spin." Simple! I spin contact, so my hair has to be up off my shoulders when the staff goes anywhere on my neck, so I wear it up in a bun.

The only time I've ever had any hair burn was at BM this year up on the Shiva Vista when I didn't take the time to wet down my hair first and the music would go in and out and throw me off. I soaked it good from then on.
