Body oil or lotion for fire performers

I have an upcoming shoot with a local fire artist and one thing that we talked about was finding some kind of oil or lotion that would give her skin a nice sheen for the pictures. Of course, this needs to not be flammable. Any suggestions?

Here is the Sponsor Letter that you can send out to friends and family to request donations for the Make a Wish foundation…

REQUEST FOR SPONSORSHIP
On Sunday January 20, I am participating in a dance-a-thon called Wishing Well @ Woodley Park to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation®. Our goal is to raise $10,000 for this worthwhile charity that has helped so many children. Please visit wishingwellwoodleypark.blogspot.com/ for full details on this event.

Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has given hope, strength and joy to children with life-threatening medical conditions. From humble beginnings with one boy’s wish to be a police officer, Make-A-Wish Foundation has evolved into an organization that grants a child’s wish in the U.S. every 41 minutes. Visit their website http://www.wish.org for more info.

I know we all have good hearts and that we believe in helping worthwhile causes and that is why I am asking you to sponsor me for this event. Sponsors make a donation by check or online and I am committed to dance for the number of hours you choose. For example, if you sponsor me to dance for four hours at $5 per hour, that would be a $20 donation to Make-A-Wish. I will then dance for four straight hours to fulfill my commitment to you.

You can also make a flat sponsorship. All sponsor contributions should be made as a check or money order made directly to the “Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Los Angeles”. or via pay pal at http://wishingwell2.blogspot.com
LA Fire Code?

Anybody know the section of the fire code in Los Angeles that covers fire performance? Specifically, are there sections that cover what I can do in my home that I own? We have a nosey neighbor who called the fire dept after our friend was spinning fire in our back yard for all of five minutes. Do I need a permit to spin at my own home? If so, can I get one that extends for weeks or do I have to get one for each time? Any help would be appreciated.

Members of Empyrean Fire Tribe will be teaching at the 3rd Coast Tribal festival in Fort Worth - and yes there will be fire in the show too.
some visual footage http://www.youtube.com/user/firediva66

the class offereings....

Fan Performance with Beverly (2 hours) - The goal of this class is to take your performance to a new level by the addition of fire fans. You will learn to move with the fans as an extension of your body and create stunning visual images. Other than Fire Safety this class will cover: Attitudinal Posturing, Combinations, Isolations, Turns & Transitions which can be used with the gorgeous feather and silk fans. Feel free to use any set of fans in class. Knowledge of basic fire or dance performance is helpful. All levels welcome. Bring your inner Fire Diva and be ready to let her out!

Poi for Belly Dancers with Lorelei (2 hours) - Back by popular demand! Learn the basics of poi spinning and how to integrate this beautiful prop into your dance. Lorelei will teach the tricks and transitions that translate to dance most readily. Your new poi skills will allow you to perform with veil poi, flags, fire, or LEDs. All levels welcome!

A Juggling Workshop with Sketch (2 hours) - Everyone can juggle. They just don't know it yet. The most basic juggling pattern, the Cascade, is easy to learn. The rest is just practice. Juggling is a great skill that will entertain you and yours tremendously. It is also a great meditation. So come on. Pull out some balls and play with them. It's a whole lot of fun by yourself or in a group. Even better, find a partner and do it together! This workshop will cover the basics of juggling in a relaxed, move-at-your-own-pace environment. Experience the thrill of juggling! It's simpler than you think!

Hoop Dance with Lorelei & Sketch (2 hours) - Put your belly dance superpowers to good use! Hula hoop is all about core control. In this class you will learn to hoop on every part of your body, from the tips of your fingers to your thighs & back up again. Learn dazzling off body tricks as well as how to flow with the hoop, creating a fluid and spiraling presentation! This will be a dynamic and intense class. Be prepared to sweat. This ain't your mama's hula hoop!

Cirque du Yoga - Partner Yoga for Dancers (2 hours) - Ever seen Cirque du Soleil and thought, I want to try that? Partner yoga combines the acrobatic grace of Cirque du Soleil with the flowing power of yoga to create a dynamic workout that will expand your physical vocabulary as well as your mind. With an emphasis on traditional yoga postures, we will blend isolated dance movements while using partners to support the body in gentle back openers and inversions for a deep, subtle, and thorough exploration of both. Our emphasis will be on proper alignment, expression, and improvisation as we create a playful and supportive environment increasing trust, strength, and flexibility.

more info here www.3rdcoasttribal.us/instructors.html OH and ...pssst... there is a package deal for all 5 of these classes (10 hours) for $130... an absolute bargain! 3rdcoast2009.eventbrite.com/

oh and if you are interested in performing....
This site began as a vision of mine somewhere around a year ago, and though it has been met with many challenges in it’s creation – with more to come, I’m sure – here it is, for you.
One of the primary goals I have for it is connecting us, all around the world. The artists, the dreamers, the people who have the power to change the world through beauty – and do. That’s absolutely everybody as far as I’m concerned, but maybe someone just needs a kick in the ass to get them going.
Please push and post this site everywhere you possibly can think of; It is the first and only of it’s kind out there as far as I know, and maybe someone has been looking for it – which is where the seed for this dream was planted. I was that person not too long ago.

Though I wish to keep away from political issues, I do want to address the numerous ways we can improve the world around us. Red, Black, White & yellow – with a Green tint. Dig what I’m saying?

SO – please check out the site, promote it to everyone, everywhere, and most importantly, enjoy it.

need to sell my 2 tickets to Fire Drums, $50.00 each

It's looking like we will not be able to make it due to work, so I need to sell my two tickets to Fire Drums the first weekend of May in Santa Cruz, CA.

I'm willing to sell them for $10 less per ticket so that perhaps someone that is really tight
on money, can still afford to go.

We're in downtown San Jose, and you'll need to be able to come and pick them up (or
arrange for someone local to pick them up on your behalf). First one that brings the cash has the tickets.

Email me directly at miranda@burningman.com

Thanks all~

Flame Effects Insurance?

Howdy,
Curious if anyone out there on the information superhighway knows of an insurance policy that covers propane-based fire sculptures in public spaces. I don't think COTUS covers this. We are going legit with the flame and need some back-up.
Any tips are appreciated. One-time or yearly policies welcome.
Thanks!

RoadTrippin. SpinJams?

Hey all.
I've been a fire performer for many years. But I've taken a break in the last 3 or so years.

I'm on a road trip down the CA coast and across the southern border to NewOrleans and back through, stopping for Fire Drums, then up to Seattle.

I'd really love to take time in all the cities I will pass through and meet up with some fellow fire performers. Dust off the skills, as it were and meet some new folks!

Anyone know any fun spin jams or gatherings happening around?

South CA Coast
South Arizona
South New Mexico
Northern Mexico?
NOLA

Thanks!
415.820.1664

Hi Everyone.
Here are the details on the SUNSET Season Opener this Sunday.
We all Love Stafford Lake Park but it does come with a host of rules.
Please help us be able to continue using this park by abiding by the following:

1. We need to observe the New "No Smoking law" in Marin. There is "no smoking in any public place in Marin County". There will be a very obvious smoking area near the event where everyone who is smoking cigarettes should be. Please spread the word!
2. No underage Drinking!
3. Designate a Sober Driver. Last year there were a couple dui's leaving Novato.
3. DO NOT pee in the bushes. Stafford Lake is a watershed and even though watering a bush with your fluids may seem harmless it is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. We have rented Porto-Pots. USE THEM. Even if there is a line.
4. NO pets allowed at Stafford Lake, Not even in your car.
5. Grass may be a bit damp from rain this week. Make sure to bring a blanket and a Jacket : )

This is a large gathering and we need everyone's collective consciousness to keep these unique events happening.
See ya Sunday!

Wickerman Burning - a new burn in south central PA

Hi!
I wanted to let everyone know about a new burn, and I am part of the planning team for it, so my opinion is biased!

The burn is "Wicker Man," to be held Thursday through Monday, Memorial Day weekend; and we have a setup weekend, the weekend before. We are trying to lay the groundwork that will grow into a full-on burn, with an amazing site, roads for art cars, a $4,000 art grant budget and plans for a stupendous effigy.

We will be using Four Quarters as our site, which has the rep as one of the most edgy and progressive non-profit camps on the east coast. They have given us their full support for Wicker Man. Four Quarters has a piped water system, hot showers, flush toilets and of course port-a-potties. Buried power lines for their bio-fueled camp generator, a covered stage and three swimming holes. Lots of camping under tall trees and out in the sun too. And 2 miles of gravelled roads. Four Quarters is located 100 miles west of DC and Baltimore, just off I-68.

We want to develop a burn that is art focused and will support big art. And one that has a vision of the future of burns that is sustainable, ecologically responsible and leaves behind a small foot print. Thus "Wicker Man;" the old celebration of the Green Man and Green energy. We already have over 20 theme camps and art projects registered, and we are just beginning our announcements. We plan to have three "Theme Towns." "Sound Town," where we can run sound all night long, like the Gaian MInd psytrance festival held at Four Quarters. "Sin City" down along the river, a cure for what ever ails you. And "Center Circle," a place for nature and spirit; held inside the amazing stone circle at Four Quarters. (Yes, there is a circle of standing stones and they are BIG!)

And then there is the Man. Planned at 35 feet high our man stands on a round Temple to the Spirit of Fire, a big enough room that you can enter and place your own art and offerings to the burn. The roof of the temple is a deck upon which stands the Man, and people can stand too.. His belly is the Upper Temple, with room for just one person at a time. Each of his arms will hold a flaming fire pot, and we hope, will move as he burns. This is a huge project and we are looking to get as many people involved in his construction as possible. Ground breaking for the Man is Friday, May 9th, and then the next two weekends until he burns.

I could go on and on, but our web site is up, with the first design drawings for the Man, pictures of art grant projects and theme camps. We have a list serve / forum too. So visit the web site at wickermanburning.org for much more info.

Wicker Man Burning, In Fire We Trust."

If you live in California, these folks are trying to make changes that could affect you. And despite the fact that no "behest" was made by any responsible agency to form this council, they are proceeding as if they have that backing.

I dont know a darn thing about fire dance / safety, but, I would like to learn.

It seems like there are a bunch of fire poi and fire hoop classes and groups in the Bay Area. Is there a place where I can learn to dance with hand torches...or a group that I can train with?

Perhaps you all train together? Please educate me :)

Thanks!

I want to make a practice staff before I move to fire. I've got a broom handle that's the right length and a has a nice feel, but it need to be a little heavier. I've seen people impale tennis balls on the ends and mount them with electrical tape, but I'm thinking there must be more than just the balls; perhaps something inside them? Also, I've seen soft rubbery strips of stuff wrapped around staves to add grip; what is that stuff?

Thanks, folk!

Poi design questions

I've been jonsing for something better than cathedral-on-choke-chain poi for a while. I've come up with a design for some all kevlar poi that I like, where the head is 3/4" or 1" kevlar rope (haven't decided yet, leaning towards 1") done into a simple circle macramé knot. The body would be 1/2" rope that runs through the space in the middle of the head (done while braiding the head) with an oyster knot on both sides of the head to keep it in place.

The handle would be the same thing done with 1/4" cotton rope (Which would be cheap and dyeable, though kevlar may be better incase the handle comes in contact with the head.)

I made a cotton prototype rather like it, especially for tosses. Before I dropped some $40 into kevlar, though, I figured I'd get some feedback on it. Is kevlar rope going to be able to hold up in tension? I like that the rope isn't permanently attached to the head, as it would at least theoretically allow for the body to be replaced. If it were to break it would seem like it would happen at the part right above the head that gets exposed to the most flame, but would it be better to err on the side of caution and sew the body into the head?

Any thoughts anyone has would be greatly appreciated, I really value the wisdom available on this board (<3 the internets).

Safety First Aid Kit

I'm in the process of getting together a larger first aid kit to be available if needed during performances and to satisfy local ordinances. Besides the usual stuff (band-aids, gauze, medwrap; tylenol and aspirin; burn ointment, and cold packs) do you have any other ideas for what could go into it to make it the 'ultimate' in protection? Don't worry about broken bones, we don't do acrobatics. Think burns.

What else should we be packing?

I'm having the damndest time finding information on building a basic fire art torch - I've got a sculpture I'm working on that I'd simply like a torch of flame shooting out of the top...any suggestions where to look. It doesn't need to have the ability to do a flame "cannon" though info on that would be cool too...

Hello, I'm sorry if this is not relevant so please delete this post if it does not fit with the community's rules.

My questions:

how long did it take people to become established fire artists/troupes;

can you do it for a living (I don't mean £££, I mean enough to fill your stomach and van) ;

and is there any other advice you would give a budding artist?

thankyou!

Flaming Sword Kits available for a limited time

Flaming Sword Kit by Amy Luna
as seen in the DVD "By Dancers For Dancers, Volume 1"

While cleaning out my closet, I found some extra flaming sword kits leftover from when I taught my flaming sword workshop at the Crucible's Fire Arts Festival a couple of years ago. The effect is a 4-5 inch flame that stays lit on the very tip of the end of your sword while you dance,

To view a photo of the effect go to http://www.amyluna.com/flamingsword.jpg

To view a video of the effect, go to http://www.amyluna.com/bdfd1.html

Simple, safe, portable, and with no modifications to your precious sword. Quick and easy prep makes this a dancer's dream when hurriedly preparing for your show in that cramped dressing room. Everything you need for dozens of performances. Also includes tips on costume and fire safety, of course.

Testimonial:
"Thank you so much for the wonderful "flaming sword" workshop. I hadn't had the nerve to try it out until last Sunday at our student night at El Morocco. Everyone enjoyed it & the flame stayed flamed up the entire performance. It was too cool & I'm so glad it worked - your instructions & tips were great!" - Malilka

$40 + $3.50 s & h

please email me or Paypal me at amyluna@amyluna.com if you are interested. I don't know when or if I'll make more kits and I'm getting ready to travel out of the country for a few months so...get 'em while they're hot 'cause when they're gone, they're gone! Good luck!
First National Hooper's Conference!!!

Hoop Convergence ~ Friday April 11 - Wednesday April 16, 2008

Please join us for the very first national (hopefully International!) Hooper’s Conference -- The Hoop Convergence.

The Hoop Convergence is the bringing together of a wide variety of hoopers from all over the world to create a synergistic learning environment where we will address all aspects of hooping. There will be panel discussions and workshops with a variety of amazing teachers and hoopers from all over the United States.

The Convergence will be held in beautiful the Hooper Haven of Carrboro, NC. Everything in this wonderful town is in walking distance and already many local hoopers are opening their homes or offering camping on their property to visiting hoopers from all over the country. Make plans to join us now.

To learn more, volunteer, make suggestions or arrange for a place to stay, please join the tribe Hoop Convergence at: http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

Here are some of the amazing workshops and activities that are confirmed as of right now:

HOOP SKILLS WORKSHOPS
Currently, Spiral, Revolva, Caroleeena and Jewels are all confirmed to teach. These workshops will teach a variety of hooping techniques, including hand work, footwork, bodywork and dance, as well as hooping specialties, such as street performance and twin hooping. There will be workshops appropriate to all skill levels and other classes will be added to the curriculum as they are confirmed. Workshop details are forthcoming.

YOGA, INJURY PREVENTION & HEALING
We will host an injury prevention discussion panel made up of yogis, hoopers, massage therapists and other body/mind workers and healers. Hopefully we will be able to offer a HoopYoga workshop as well.

COSTUME DESIGN and THEATER MAKE-UP WORKSHOPS
In addition to learning costume design and theater make-up, the Convergence will also include a trade circle, a costume swap, sewing and non-sewing methods for making/decorating costumes, pattern shares, and a discussion where we will share ideas about themes, hoopable clothing and info for creating fire safe costumes . If you stay for the entire week, there will be excursions to some kick ass thrift stores too! (Then, after the Convergence, you can try out your new threads at Shakori Hills the following weekend!)

COMMUNITY, SERVICE PROJECTS and WORLD HOOP DAY
There will also be a discussion panel on community building, event planning, service projects and World Hoop Day. Hoopin' Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, Jewels, who created Hoops for Haiti, and Caroleeena, who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica are all confirmed and will all be available to help you envision and manifest your world hoop day events or community outreach projects. (Hopefully Xta will be able to make it also!)

FIRE
On Saturday night, we will have a drum circle and fire ceremony with fire dancing. If you haven't fire hooped before, this could be your moment! There will also be discussions on Fire Philosophy & Ritual, Safety, Tool Repair, Craft and Professionalism. (There may also be a workshop highlighting a variety of different fire hoops and build techniques. We may not have time amidst everything else to build our own fire hoops, but maybe. If not, I'm sure you can order one from a local crafter to be customized for you and ready for your arrival to NC or to be shipped to you when you return home.)

JAM ~ DANCE PARTY
Sunday night, we will have a funky, dressy, jamming hoop hop set. There will also be a pre-party, house-party for dressing and making up!

OTHER THINGS we hope to include are:
Performances by and for each other
Publicity and Marketing
Business Management and Taxes for Professionals
Teaching Techniques
Hooping with kids
Sharing Poetry and Stories
Hoop Philosophy and Spirituality

Finally, if we can manage it, and if we have enough people at Shakori Hills, I think it would be fun to try to choreograph and premier the world’s largest choreographed hoop dance! I know they would let us do it there. We just have to see if we can make it happen!

We have lots of other ideas too – Circus hooping, Native American Hoop Dance, Rhythmic Gymanastics, Hoop Yoga, integrating specific types of dance into hooping, and more – but those things may have to wait until next year … unless you know someone willing and/or able to teach! If you have an idea for a workshop, please join the Hoop Convergence Tribe and share it with us! http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

If you would like to teach or lead a discussion panel, please post that on the Hoop Convergence tribe too or feel free to PM a description to Jewels at hoopflow@gmail.com. We will accommodate what we can given space availability and group sizes. Teaching or leading a panel will enable you to attend other workshops for free. Depending on our turnout, you will hopefully also receive compensation for your efforts. (We are still working out the estimated costs for this event but we are working to keep them reasonable. Several teachers are volunteering altogether.)

Prices and other details will follow soon. New items are being added everyday!

If you can stay through the week, festivities, workshops, discussion panels and field trips will be offered Friday through Wednesday. Then, on Thursday, we'll head over to Silk Hope for a great, family-friendly, hooper-rich, inexpensive local music festival with incredibly sweet vibes through the following Sunday!

If you can't stay through the week and for the music festival, there will be plenty of hoopy goodness happening during the weekend from Fri - Sun/Mon. Do try to stay Sunday night for a big jam and costuming pre-party though!

For more information about the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Peace and Dance (April 17 - 20, 2008), go to: www.shakorihills.org

Again, if you are willing and able to participate in any way, please do! Your input and expertise are essential. So please join the Hoop Convergence tribe today. We hoopfully hope to hoop with you soon!

*Where*: Smash Labs, 1714 Albion St, Los Angeles, CA 90031 323-227-6274

*When*: Doors open at 7pm Meeting begins at 8pm

*Who*: All members of the Los Angeles Based Fire Arts Community

*Why*: During recent interactions with Los Angeles County and State _Fire
Marshalls <http://www.film.ca.gov/LocationResources/FilmSafety.html>_we have
learned that they are in the process of designing a set of safety standards
and guidelines in an effort to standardize safety requirements within our
industry. These safety guidelines are to be implemented in the first
quarter of 2008.

We have the great fortune that our local county Fire Marshalls have
offered to allow us participate in the design of these standards.
Organizations such as the Safety Advisory for Fire and FX in Entertainment
(SAFFE)and members of the Pyrotechnics community have offered to provide
guidance or advice in the different methods of organizing ourselves and
interfacing with regulatory and enforcement entities such as the Fire
Department.

This *_Wednesday, December 12, 2007_* a Town Hall Meeting has been called to
inform the community and discuss the formation an organization comprised of
members representing the interests of the Los Angeles fire community.

******It is time for us all to come together, as a community - to openly
create our own guidelines that address issues, such as safety, performance
standards, etc. It is of the utmost importance that we collectively decide
this before it is decided for us*****

In Addition, there is a new e-mail discussion list for
fire artists and people who are interested in fire performance in the Los
Angeles area. This list can be joined by following this link:

http://www.curiousjosh.com/lafire

This list is an opportunity for us to stay in touch as a community, and
discuss a number of pressing issues that are affecting the Los Angeles fire
community such as the upcoming implementation of safety regulations,
standards, and restrictions governing our industry.

The LA Fire mailing list will be a great place to:
discuss issues affecting the fire community
share fire related tips and techniques
communicate about fire events in the LA area
and more

Please spread the word by continuing to forward this to fire performers who
are in Los Angeles, or who visit Los Angeles and perform with fire. If we
fail in this initiative then viewpoints such as "Poi is the most dangerous
tool in your arsenal" or the potential banning of poi spinning in the
direction of the audience may become a reality.

Troupes & Tool Manufacturers that have involvement in this initiative have
included: CuriousJosh, Fire Drums, Fire Groove, Los Angeles Fire Effects (LAFX),
Machina
Candeo, Mutaytor, Phoenix Projekt, Pyrophernalia / Om Fire, Sirena
Serpentina, Trick Concepts, & Volcano Flux.

*_Directions:
_*
SmashLabs
1714 Albion Street (entrance is here - big red door with cut metal numbers -
push down on the lever to enter)
The "back" door is a big roll door in the last parking lot on the North side
of Main just before the train tracks - look for the La Mano Press sign. If
it's full, there is an empty lot directly across the street on the South
side of Main Street, or feel free to park on Main or Albion and come in the
front. *main thing to remember is if you've gone over the tracks, you've
passed Albion which is a TINY street and easy to miss.

Wal-Mart effect

Okay, so a few of us have noticed that it's getting harder to find Coleman's Camp fuel. At first, we thought it was the DEA cracking down on Meth labs. But I think it's something more insidious. WalMart.

Wal Mart has started selling Coleman's fuel in the gallon cans. No, not that dirty Ozark stuff, I'm talking the genuine thing. I wouldn't have known this if I hadn't been desperate to get fuel for a recent gig.

This is a typical pattern for Wal Mart. Offer shelf space to a manufacturer on an inordinately large number of units (usually 2-3 times their total existing market). Then, the manufacturer neglects it's relationships with other venues (in this case, Sports Chalet, OSH, etc) until they give up completely. The same thing happened between Levis and the Gap. Then Wal Mart forces the company to increase efficiency and constantly drive the price down, or they go around and deal with the suppliers directly.

Fortunately for Coleman's, Wal Mart already tried going around and failed with the cheaper product. So, I don't think they'll disappear. But it may mean that Wal Mart is the only place to get it for a while.

I wish that i could make a legit living from filming fire! There has to be a way! I hate my real job! ....sorry for that rant everyone, but I had to vent for a second. Anyone want to fly me somewhere? I will film you doing what you love and I'll give you all the footage. I'll edit everything for you too if you want. I have a hook at a print shop, so I can blow up pics too. All I want is some food/beer and to get out of town for a minute! Ya' know.?

Interesting night at our weekly spin jam last night. I was the fifth person to show up, and when I got there, there were some of the usual suspects, along with one new person. A pixie of a girl, tossing off clean waist-wraps and other fairly technical moves.

Turns out she started with poi five months ago, and while she aspires to use fire, she hasn't done so yet.

She started asking the rest of us "how do you do XYZ?"—for moves like the neck-wrap, which she nailed immediately. And other moves that she picked up immediately. She asked us how to do a tricky combo that none of us could actually do, only describe and demonstrate in pieces (and which originally took me a long time just to visually parse when I watched someone else do it). She told us how she methodically worked on new moves by learning every variation on known moves she could think of—exactly the kind of advice a more experienced spinner would give.

I started spinning poi myself in 2001. That made me part of the third wave of spinners around here, and at that time, I already had the benefit of having watched a lot of other firedancers, of being able to view tutorial videos for a basic repertoire of moves online, to discuss moves online with a generally agreed vocabulary (which is a big deal), etc. Even back then, some of the old-timers commented how much quicker the newcomers were picking things up.

Of course, now we have Youtube, we have a much more sophisticated body of moves and styles that have been documented online, and we have more people doing it. So people can get even better even faster.

All that said, I still feel like I was witnessing something special. Her name's Arianna, and I'm looking forward to great things from her.

advice on internationl travel with fire props?

I am about to leave for India and I have a lot of fire props that I need to bring with me that are pretty far from having virgin wicks. I heared that technically I can't bring anything in my checked luggage that has traces of fuel on it. I was wondering if anyone has any advice. I'm traveling Continental Airlines if that means anything in particular to anyone.
I also heared of "washing" wicks which I'm kind of curious about. I'm actually a little more concerned with getting the props back into the US than getting them out there, and if there was a way for me to "wash" the wicks that would help.
thank you!

TEACH me to play with fire!! Where do I go?

Hi!
I am extremly interested in learning to play with fire. All different types of fire play really excites me!! Every since I was a little girl I would set my hand on fire and put it out and place fully flamming matchbooks in my mouth. Haha, well anyway, I really want to learn and was wondering if there is anyone out there willing to teach me.. If not where do I go to learn such skills??

Thank you. :)

a shift in time... of the spin

I still can't clearly comprehend precisely how this works but early Sunday morning our time is going to fall back an hour. what that means I think is that now the sun will be setting around five in the afternoon.
So, I'm gonna start going out to the Santa Cruz lighthouse around four whenever possible so we can still get in some daytime spinning. from that point it is the usual deal. light up at sunset and stay either until we run out of fuel or the guard kicks us out to close the gate.
see you there.

I also am going to start looking into finding another location with some degree of shelter where we can continue to firedance during the winter season. if any one has thoughts or knowledge about this please let us know.

if you don't know how to get there, from the wharf/boardwalk go north on beach st. which becomes west cliff dr. after you go up the hill. Bay st. intersects there. then follow the cliffs until you reach the red brick lighthouse on the point.

So I've asked this question in person from a few of the more edumacated fire spinners on this tribe, and I thought it might make a good internet discussion too... especially because it would be impossible to prove, though there are plenty of facts and anecdotes people can pull out to make their case.

Basically, do the positive benefits of stretching, being physically active, aerobic exercise, and other good aspects of spinning fire outweigh the negative effects of breathing toxic fumes, having poisons on your skin, burning yourself on occasion, and the other downsides of playing with fire?

Fire performers seem to be some of the most physically fit people around, but are we all gonna die of cancer or self immolation in a few years?

Well, you could either wrap them up in tin foil, your dad's old socks or plastic bags.
I'd however consider getting some proper wick covers made for youself.

This site (www.hyperloophoops.com) happens to sell hand made wick covers which can be shipped internationally.
This site also happens to be one I help run :oD
One of the cool accomplishments at last weekend's WildFire event (a fire performers' training camp in CT): we lined up 21 people, but the pass made it only through 18. Still, pretty impressive, and we have it on video.

Hi all,
I'm in my first trimester of pregnancy, and was wondering if anyone has any info about the safety of playing with fire while pregnant??

I typically use Kleen Heat fuel, but am concerned about breathing in the fumes. I've been playing it safe and not burning at all, but am curious if anyone has experience with this.

Thanks!

Fuel station fires

So, what happens if a fuel station (say, a metal dipping can containing white gas) accidentally catches on fire? Is it any more difficult to put out than just putting the lid back on it? Can it explode?

A long time ago I had leftover kerosene in a dipping can and lit it in order to get rid of it. All it made was a minor fire inside the can which burned for about fifteen minutes and then went out.

Would you like to perform on Opulent Temple's stage

Hello

I'm writing to you to let you know about performance opportunities at Burning Man this year. I am the performance coordinator for the Opulent Temple! I'm sure may of you have heard of us and have probably danced at our camp at one time or another. Well this year we are bringing it to a new level. We have been working for the last 4 months on building a stage that is going to be a place for performers to do their thing. If you do fire, aerial, circus, whatever it is you're into please consider coming and doing your thing at our camp. Its not just about the d.j's anymore, we want to make Opulent Temple a place that showcases everyones talents. This year we would love to have performers come out and do their thing to open up each major d.j's set, that way its a definate transition point and it gives our audience a feast for their eyes as well as their ears!!!!

A little bit about the stage. Its being built in the shape of a star, and it will be raised 10 ft off the ground. There will be 5 points to perform on, so for troupes this is perfect....you can each take a piece of the star. The negative space of the star is the stage, i.e: the dancing people down below will be able to see everyone perform....its wicked, but difficult to explain without a drawing. And covering the star stage will be an open air bamboo dome that will have rigging capabilities for those who do aerial, the rigging point being the center of the star! This is a very basic description but I hope it peaks your interest.

If you would like to talk to me in person so I can explain in more details, please email me with your contact info and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. You are welcome to send this information to any other performers that you think would want to come and dance with us.

Thanks for your time!!

looking for a skilled artist who is very capable with a cutting torch for a brief contribution to a long overdue art project.

Goal:
To have the words "Fire Conclave" cut into a strip of metal about 4-6" high.

Finis:
This will be used in a sign to be hung from Conclave Convergence to give it better visibility. Several thin tubes feeding propane flames will be placed behind this piece and a protective frame will be built around them. Then, the tubes will be connected to a propane source and run for several hours a night.

my very wonderful and amazing friend is chairing a scholarship/grant charity benefit for the arts in New Orleans on 9/8/07.

she desperately needs two fire dancers.

while there is no pay for the performance being that it is a charity benefit, you will get free room and board for the weekend, as well as be able to have a great time seeing all the many different kinds of performers that will be there, and receive a load of appreciation from those hosting the event. i'd go myself if i was better than my current amateur status.

if you or anyone you know may be interested, please message me and i will send you her contact info.

thank you!

UberParis report -- and comments on the European Scene

UberParis was this weekend, 15-17 June. About 80 spinners from all over Europe gathered together in a gymnasium for three days of intense workshops. And then there was me, and Noel and Krissy from San Francisco, and a pair of Canadians to round out the overseas contingent.

The Uber events were started a few years ago by Rob Thorburn, a UK juggler and spinner. I had a chance to meet him and his partner Ros before the event. They're very, very nice people, and obviously deeply passionate about not only the Spinning Arts themselves, but the community involved. This warms my heart. It's about the people, man. And so they've been running masterclass workshops literally all over the world now, from London to Paris to Australia. See UberEvents.org.

For those of you who have been to, say, FireDrums, this is different. First of all, the point of an Uber event is workshops. There is some play time, but not much. Workshops from from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM every day. It begins with a group warmup. Lunch is served. Everyone is tired and sore at the end of the day, and although it's really really tempting to party afterwards... well, there's that hybrid workshop first thing tomorrow morning.

These are, it must also be emphasized, *master* classes. I would say that I was a truly mediocre spinner in comparison to most of the people attending. The European spinners are serious folks when it comes to their art. For one thing, street performance is a traditional and still financially viable artform in Europe. Busking is recognized and occurs in every major European city, and there are in fact a large number of street theatre festivals every summer. There are not only gatherings of people having fun but a chance for the performers to make some money. Many of the artists at UberParis also hold down professional or semi-professional performance careers, doing fire shows for corporate events, aerial or acrobatics performances, etc.

I personally felt that the poi workshops were taught at just the right level. Rather than drill sessions, they were mostly higher-level or "conceptual" courses. Each one generally dealt with an entire class of moves, e.g. hybrids, throws, wraps, extensions. The instructor would start with the simplest example of each trick -- say, a hybrid in the front plane with one poi -- and explain what would need to be perfected before moving onto the next step, which would then be demonstrated. The courses were, in effect, outlines of programs of study as opposed to practice sessions themselves. I really like this. I think it's a very efficient use of smart people's time.

Personally, here is what I learned this weekend:

- Isolation is not a trick but a whole new mode of driving the poi. I need to practice it in every position and direction until it's clean and easy, then with turns, then with weaves, then with butterflies... basically I need to drill isolated poi from the ground up to gain my freedom of movement, just as I did years ago with simple spinning.

- Throws. I understand the principles now. Basically any combination of release limb, direction, side, and catch limb is possible, though some are definitely harder than others.

- Extensions. The idea is to spin one poi in a small circle, then spin your whole arm so that your other hand is aligned with the poi head, creating the illusion that the two poi are attached to a stick, a sort of "virtual staff". Then you can add isolation, anti-spin...

- "Driving styles." This was really a breakthrough for me, a really nice way of thinking about poi. Basically any standard move can be executed in any "driving style", which is what your ARM is doing as opposed to the poi. Stationary arm = normal poi. Moving in a large slow circles = flowers. Moving in large slow circles the other way = anti-spin. Large fast circles = extensions. Straight lines = linear extensions, stalls, or ellipses depending on speed and timing. Etc. Thinking about it this way gives a unifying vocabulary to many different tricks, and clarifies the practice order.

There were other workshops, of course, and then all of the staff workshops too, which I did not attend because I do not spin staff. I'll leave it to someone else to describe them, but my impression is that they too were very good.

In other words, the event was fantastic and the people were great. I think I can wholeheartedly recommend any Uber workshop to anyone who’s interested. There have not yet been any in North America, and I don’t know if any are planned, but I think I can pimp for Noel’s Spinagogue event which is occurring 13-15 July in Oakland, for anyone who’s interested (contact sanfranfire@gmail.com.) It seems to be similar in format to UberParis, which Noel just attended, completely aside from the fact that he’s a really good spinner in his own right.

Although Rob and co organized the event, it was hosted and coordinated logistically by the wonderful Burn Crew Concept, a Paris fire crew. They are large, about 50 people, and are the dominant fire community in Paris. They have weekly jams, build performances together, and do a fair number of paid gigs. As the name suggests, these people are fire people, but not everyone in Europe does fire. The fire and spinning cultures are deeply intertwined in San Francisco, and most of America, I suspect, and certainly SE Asia, and Australia and New Zealand too. Not so in Europe, and I got to witness a fascinating conversation on this subject between Rob who leads Uber and Das who is the president of BCC.

What is the point of practicing technical poi in a gymnasium for 8 hours a day? Is it to perform these moves later with fire? Is it an artform all by itself? Are you trying to make a living off your talent? There were people at Uber representing all of these different motivations. And what, in fact is the interesting aspect of this art? Is it the fire itself, the beauty and danger of the element? Or is it the motion that excites, the grace and mastery and illusion of object manipulation? These two general directions lead to different roads. Those drawn to fire might eventually stray into pyrotechnics, fire sculpture, and mechanized toys. Those all about the motion tend to learn multiple toys, tend to be jugglers, dancers, and circus arts people.

UberParis was more about the juggling school of thought. There was one night hosted by BCC where everyone burned at an amazing place called the Palais du Tokyo, with a view of the Eiffel tower, but this was hardly the main event of the event. For one thing, there was no fire-breathing allowed, which is usually a mainstay of BCC fire activities. Rob felt it too dangerous -- he's seen someone die from bad fire breathing -- and didn't want any injuries at an event he organized. But really, our night out playing with fire was far overshadowed by our night in: the indoor show that Rob and others organized.

It was fucking incredible. I've now seen people do things with staffs, clubs, and rings that I never thought possible. I was really blown away by the artistry and technical accomplishments of the performances. It is difficult to explain the kind of work we saw. "Object manipulation" is the appropriate general term. We saw clubs spun as a neat poi/juggling hybrid, staff spinners doing isolations and anti-spin, and two different acts from Paris artists which might best be described as technical mime, or perhaps human Winamp visualizations. One involved two batons, moved and danced with so as to appear that they were pinned to an invisible cord, attached at one end, attached to each other with a swivel, and/or generally defying gravity. Another involved small hoops that were rotated while floating in the air, around each other in three dimensions, or in greater numbers than available hands. It was the sort of stuff you think is impossible until someone does it, the sort of act that involves creating an illusion by means of some amazingly clean manipulations. Beautiful. Everyone was blown away by the show.

There is an entire festival in the UK devoted to this and other similar arts with toys. It’s called Play, now in its third year. The concept is workshops, performances, some live music, and lots of time and space to play with toys. There’s some fire, but that’s not the main point. Apparently it’s a really fun thing. I must say that it’s not really my subculture, since, well, I just don’t know if I’m excited enough about juggling and street theatre to do four days of it, but I might go anyway.

Conversely, as far as I can tell there is little to no mechanized fire art in Europe. I’ve heard tales of some sort of fire organ in Germany, and some sort of fire fountain piece, both of which I intend to track down… but basically, nothing. No one in Paris is working with propane, let alone Tesla coils and colored alcohol. There is, however, a licensed pyrotechnician on the BCC team, who does the pyro when they’re hired for big shows. But of course, I’ve been around the scene for, what, five days now? I will be heading to several European festivals this summer. I’ll be sure to research this further.

In short, San Francisco has a lot to learn a lot about spinning from Paris (who several people consider to have overtaken London as the European spinning cultural capital) and Paris could learn something about fire from San Francisco. Hooray for cultural exchange!

help making a new fire costume

I'm currently working on new costume ideas for fire dance. I work with staff and fans, but am a belly dancer by trade, and thus most of my costumes are flowy artsy pieces that just aren't safe to wear with fire. Thus far, I've ended up performing with fire in basic cotton cholis, jeans or tight cotton pants, etc. I often perform shows with my troupe where I need to be able to switch gears from one performance type to another, and the transition from belly dance costume to my fire clothes is off-putting. What I want to make is something that would work as a belly dance costume, but is safe to perform fire with. I understand what fabrics to look for (ie not synthetic) but am having problems with the design, as most denims, courderoys, etc that I have found are not the types of fabrics I'm used to sewing, nor do they lend themselves easily to flowing skirts. (I do have tops that work, the biggest difficulty is the bottom half of the costume)
So, the question is: are there any other belly dancers out there who have confronted this type of problem, and do you have any advice, or links to photos for ideas. I would greatly appreciate any help you could give.

Fall WildFire tickets are now on sale. This will be our 6th performing fire arts training retreat, and a continuation of the amazing sharing, learning, and growing environment that so many of you have helped create. This fall will have even more emphasis on all of the performance aspects of our arts while maintaining the incredible level of technical instruction.

WildFire attendance is capped at 150 people. We sold out in the spring in four weeks. The fall will probably sell out in less.

For information about classes (spring's schedule is up currently), a description of the event, pictures, maps, directions, a survival guide, and to buy tickets go to - www.copperheadfire.com/wildfire/

so,
are there specific moves that most fan dancers learn, or is it all different for each dancer? i hoop, and there are a lot of moves used by all hoopers. this might be a silly question, but from what little fire footage i've seen, it's all just expressive and not specific moves...can anyone give me some insight? fire fans done well looks soooo beautiful to me.

Getting a fire show together

Hey everyone :)

I'm arranging a fire show in the Phoenix metro area... there will be drums and there will be me so far... I have no date or location because I don't even know anyone in the fire community in this area.

What I'm looking for on that day is simply people to come play. In the future though, I'm looking for a team who's willing to travel around the world and spin fire at shows. This was inspired by some recent contacts I've made in the music world, plus this girl who came to play a fire show in the mountains outside of tokyo while I was there. This is an opportunity for travel as it won't take much funding for me to start and it will also be something that pays for itself... one, because I know how to ask for money from clients / etc... and two because I know people who can really get the word out about that stuff. The only thing I've been waiting on was for my skill level to get high enough to take it to the next level and start doing live paid performances. Anyone else at that place, and who wants to travel, reply, hit me up, whatever...

As for now though, for this next party, just need a bunch of fire juggling freaks to roll through and play with me. It's lonely out here in the desert.
